Can Different Frozen Products Share a Container

A mixed frozen-food load needs compatible transport conditions and a workable plan for every SKU. Compare packing, carton space, production readiness and document requirements, then decide which products can move together and what to adjust before booking.

Different frozen products can share a container when their required transport conditions, packaging, cargo compatibility and shipment arrangements work together. Assess each proposed SKU before confirming the assortment. Frozen fruits, vegetables and mushrooms can have different packing, handling and release requirements.

Start with the quantity, pack, required conditions, production location and readiness of each item. Check the combined load against the selected reefer, route and receiving arrangements. Keep each product’s lot and document references identifiable throughout consolidation. If one item needs incompatible conditions, unavailable documents or a later production date, revise the assortment or shipment plan before booking.

We review mixed-container requests in this order because a commercially attractive range can still be awkward to assemble. Adding a small trial item may introduce a separate production minimum, transfer or approval. Our feasibility reply identifies which products can travel together, the outstanding checks and any changes needed to make the order workable.

Start with the actual SKU list

Give every product its own line, even when several items share one brand or customer. “Ten tonnes of mixed vegetables” leaves the supplier without the information needed to check individual forms, packs and quantities. Identify whether the order contains separate vegetable SKUs, a premixed vegetable product, or both. Those are different production and packing requests.

For a fruit item, name the fruit and cut. For a mushroom blend, identify the agreed composition and preparation state. For a vegetable, distinguish loose pieces, portions and other ordered forms. The frozen fruit range, vegetable range and mushroom range can support selection, but the shipment review needs the specific items you intend to buy.

Use one quantity basis consistently and show the conversion when needed. A request in kilograms should still connect to the number of packs and cartons proposed. Keep the desired quantity separate from an acceptable adjustment range; this lets us examine a feasible case count without treating a planning alternative as an approved order change.

Mark the products that justify the shipment and those that are optional. Set a latest acceptable readiness date for a trial SKU that could delay the core order. Agree whether the trial product can move to the next shipment, use a different pack or be omitted if its readiness or loading requirements conflict with the main order.

Confirm a common transport condition

Collect the required carriage instructions for every SKU and compare them before choosing a shared setting. A storage statement on one specification and a carrier setting on another may describe different things. Record the intended product condition, the requested operating instructions and any special handling requirement clearly enough for the responsible logistics parties to review.

Reefer equipment varies. Maersk’s refrigerated-cargo information lists several equipment types and emphasises commodity-specific transport needs. A capability advertised across a fleet does not establish the capabilities of the particular unit booked for your shipment. Confirm the chosen equipment and instructions with the carrier or forwarder.

A conventional single-compartment reefer should not be planned as separate independently controlled rooms. Putting different SKUs at opposite ends, or placing a carton divider between them, does not establish separate temperature conditions. If the required conditions cannot be met by the shared equipment, ask for an appropriate alternative route or separate shipments instead of improvising a compromise setting.

In its carriage terms, section 12, Maersk calls for written notice of the required temperature or other controls and explains that reefers are not designed to freeze down cargo presented above its designated carrying temperature. For the proposed order, confirm product readiness before loading and send the agreed instructions through the booking handoff. Check the terms and operating guidance of the carrier actually used.

Keep the setting and the condition evidence distinct. A requested set point is an instruction; it is not a measurement of each product. Where temperature records are required, agree the measurement target, timing and responsibility. Check packaging and cargo compatibility

Review the finished packs that will travel, including inner closures and outer cartons. An open product sample helps identify the food, but does not show how the shipping pack protects it. Check the specification and pack construction for each SKU; a familiar product name is not enough to establish protection during a shared journey.

The 2014 CTU Code, Annex 7, section 3.2 addresses mixed-cargo compatibility, including package strength, dirt, moisture and odour. It calls for suitable separation or effective protection where incompatible cargoes are packed together. Review how the actual packs provide that protection; a nominal gap between pallets may be insufficient.

Identify relevant ingredients and intended use, especially for seasoned or prepared products. Do not assume all frozen foods are ready to eat, or that freezing removes the need to control contamination. The responsible food safety team should review any raw-to-ready-to-eat, allergen or other contamination concern and specify the controls required for the proposed packs and handling route.

For U.S. motor and rail operations within its scope, the FDA sanitary transportation rule addresses temperature control, contamination from raw food or non-food items, and allergen cross-contact. Its scope includes some inland movements of imported containers, with exceptions; it does not regulate the ocean leg itself under this rule. Confirm the requirements that apply to the actual route and operations.

Inspect proposed cartons for handling suitability as well as printed information. Different footprints and stacking strengths can complicate a combined load. A heavy carton resting on a weaker pack, or an unstable transition between carton sizes, needs a loading solution from the responsible packer. Do not approve a mixed arrangement solely from the total cubic volume.

Where a concern remains unresolved, identify the item and the reason in the feasibility reply. The next step might be a confirmed alternative pack, a documented protection arrangement or a separate shipment. Keep that decision tied to the actual product and route so a later substitution does not inherit an approval that no longer applies.

Calculate space from the outer pack

Calculate preliminary carton volume from external dimensions, then review the loading arrangement. Net product weight alone cannot establish how many cartons fit. Include the outer carton length, width and height, gross weight, number of cartons, and any pallet or handling requirement. Use one set of units throughout the calculation.

Consider two hypothetical cartons, each containing 10 kg net product. Carton A measures 40 × 30 × 25 cm outside, giving 0.40 × 0.30 × 0.25 = 0.030 m³. Carton B measures 50 × 30 × 25 cm, giving 0.0375 m³. One hundred cartons therefore have nominal outer volumes of 3.0 m³ and 3.75 m³ respectively, although both contain 1,000 kg net product. B uses 25% more carton volume.

These totals use only the stated hypothetical outer dimensions. They exclude pallets, securing materials, layout gaps and the space needed for the equipment’s air circulation. It does not predict container capacity. Replace these dimensions with the confirmed outer pack for every proposed SKU and retain the pack version used in the calculation.

Check the result as a physical arrangement. A carton dimension may fit an overall volume calculation but produce an inefficient row, a difficult transition between products or an unsuitable stack. Pallet dimensions and height can change the result again. Ask the loading party to assess the actual arrangement and equipment limits before confirming quantities.

Hapag-Lloyd’s reefer handling guidance highlights the load line, the T-bar floor loading area and unobstructed air circulation. Some space must remain available for the intended air path. Follow the guidance for the booked equipment and the responsible loading plan; filling every visible gap can interfere with the intended air path.

Record gross cargo weight separately from net saleable weight. Pallets, cartons and securing materials also matter to the load assessment. The final quantity must work within the applicable equipment and route limits as well as the commercial order. A preliminary cube estimate should remain labelled preliminary until those checks are complete.

Bring the products together at the right time

Mixed products may come from different facilities or cold stores. Identify the proposed origin of each item, the consolidation location and the party responsible for each transfer. A common loading port does not mean that all goods are already at the same place. Additional collection and storage can change the cost and timing of the order.

Build the schedule around readiness milestones: product availability, packing completion, required approval, release and arrival at the loading location. Ask for the stage actually reached. A production date, a packed-goods date and a release date are different planning references. Where a laboratory result or artwork correction is still required, include its effect on the earliest available dispatch.

Suppose a distributor wants a core vegetable SKU and a smaller trial fruit SKU in one departure. The vegetable is ready at the proposed cold store, while the fruit’s printed pack is still awaiting approval. The decision is whether to wait, change the fruit pack through the proper approval process, defer the trial or use a separate shipment. The example does not imply a fixed lead time; it shows which dependency must be resolved.

Confirm the conditions and records at the consolidation point. Identify who receives each lot, checks quantities and condition, keeps the stock identifiable and releases it to loading. If the plan includes extra transfers, define their handoff responsibilities. A single final container reference does not replace the records needed to connect the incoming goods with that load.

Compare the whole proposed route when evaluating savings. Include additional collection, cold storage, handling and documentation work in the commercial review. Use quoted costs for the actual route and quantities. A lower ocean-freight allocation per item can be offset by the work needed to assemble a small or geographically dispersed assortment.

Agree a decision date for changes before the booking becomes difficult to alter. Record which person can approve removing an item or moving the departure. That prevents different parties from continuing to plan against different versions of the same SKU list.

Keep documents and lot identities separate

One container can contain several product lines and production lots. Preserve the connection between each SKU, its quantity, pack marks, lot references and required records. Show those separate product lines and quantities clearly in the combined commercial file.

Review destination requirements product by product with the responsible buyer, broker and documentation parties. Requirements and document availability can differ with the product, production facility, origin and destination. Do not assume that a document available for one vegetable item also covers a mushroom or fruit item in the same container.

Before the final loading list is issued, compare the accepted SKU register with the proposed packing list and shipping instructions. Check descriptions, carton counts, weights, marks and relevant lot references. Confirm the consignee and receiving arrangements. If an item was removed or its quantity changed, carry that revision into all affected records through the agreed approval route.

Use a practical location record where it helps receiving and inspection. For palletised goods, retain the pallet-to-SKU and lot relationship. For a floor-loaded arrangement, agree how the loading record will identify the groups and their quantities. Any access requirement must be considered together with loading stability and refrigeration requirements by the responsible loading party.

For an item still awaiting a required document or release, state the unresolved condition and the affected quantity. Confirm whether the affected item can proceed under the agreed order and destination requirements before allocating its loading space. Keep any accepted exclusion or replacement visible before the container and seal references are finalised.

Decide what to change when the first load does not work

Name the constraint in the feasibility reply and give an option that addresses it. “Mixed loading available” is too broad when an actual order has an incompatible condition or an unfinished SKU. Equally, one difficult item does not explain whether the remaining assortment could proceed.

For a proposed quantity adjustment, state the affected SKU and case count. If a split is proposed, identify which products move together and which departure remains unconfirmed. If a pack change is proposed, show its approval requirements and revised dimensions instead of assuming the existing load calculation still applies.

Then issue a controlled final SKU list with the accepted quantities, packs, required conditions, document responsibilities and loading route. Record who approved the changes and when. Use that list for the last readiness check so the facility, logistics team and buyer work from the same assortment.
